high School Signage

School Signage

Signs that help visitors, students and staff without getting in the way

Good school signage answers questions before anyone has to ask them. Where do I park? Which door is the office? Which block is Room 14? Where do we go if the alarm sounds?

The best school signs use plain wording, sit where someone needs them, and stay out of corridors and doorways.

We cover the full journey: the sign at the gate, the route to the office, the way around the campus, the safety signs every school has to have, and the signs that show whose school this is, including your te reo Māori, colours and story.

Signbiz National Coverage Map

Nationwide Service

One signage partner for every campus

Signbiz has 11 branches, and we travel from Northland to Invercargill, so there is a local team for schools in the main centres and beyond.
A single school gets the same team from first visit to final install.

If you have several campuses, or a group of schools that want to match, you get the same brand files, colours and materials on every site and one point of contact.

We are one company, not a franchise, so that consistency is built in.

Inspiration from schools around the world that we can build right here in New Zealand

If you have seen an entrance, corridor or mural you like, bring it along. We will work out how to build it here, in materials that last through New Zealand weather and school traffic.
Reference photos, your brand guidelines or a Pinterest board are all a good place to start.

Our Process

A simple approach that works around the school day

A school can’t pause while signs go in. Classes are running, students are moving between blocks and parents are dropping off. Our process is built around that.

One Point of Contact from Start to Finish

One project manager runs your job from first site visit to final install, including across several campuses. Signbiz is one company, so the installers and crews are ours and no work is passed between separate businesses.

Your School Stays Open While We Work

We plan installation around your timetable. Larger jobs go in during school holidays, and smaller ones happen outside class, break and drop-off times. Our team works to Sitewise Gold and Site Safe standards, and every job is backed by our workmanship guarantee.

1. Browse Our Site
Browse our website, look through options and get some inspiration. We are proud of our reviews, check out what our customers have to say.
2. Contact Us
Give Us a Call! Consultation starts with understanding your products, needs, and specific timelines.
3. Site Check
We walk the school with you, ideally the way a visitor would, and note sign positions, fixings, access and anything that needs consent.
4. Design
Our graphic design team prepares proofs in your colours, typeface and te reo Māori wording for you or your board to approve. Design focuses on signs that can be read from a distance, clear routes from the gate to every part of the school, and a look that stays consistent from the entrance to the classroom door.
5. Fabrication
Fabrication is done in-house, with materials chosen for each spot, from low-level signs that get knocked to sun-exposed walls where cheap films fade.
6. Deliver & Install
Supply or installation options are available depending on your needs and location.
7. Guarantee
Everything we produce is backed by the Signbiz Workmanship Guarantee.

Ready When You Are!

Get your school or University signage sorted

Building a new school, refreshing a pre-school entrance, or fixing the wayfinding on a campus that has grown. Talk to a team that’s done all three.

School Signage:
Tips and Tricks

Simple ways to make your school or campus easy to find and easy to get around

Walk it as a visitor first

Ask someone who has never been to your campusto find the office, the hall and the nearest toilets using only the signs. Every time they hesitate or ask someone, a sign is missing or in the wrong place. Do this walk before you order anything. It shows you where signs are needed, and where they aren’t.

Match the material to the spot

A sign at the gate faces sun and rain. A sign at knee height in a corridor gets kicked. A sign near the field gets hit by balls and sometimes tagged. Aluminium, ACM and acrylic handle most of it. Printed graphics last longer with the right laminate, and anti-graffiti laminates make marker and spray paint far easier to clean off.

Make signs easy to update

Staff change, rooms change use and schools grow. Sign systems with replaceable inserts, or templates your own team can print from, mean you change a name instead of replacing a sign. At Te Matapihi Wellington City Library we supplied templates and cut vinyl training so the library team could make small changes themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make te reo Māori and bilingual signs for schools and campuses?2026-09-23T13:22:30+12:00

Yes. We make bilingual school signs in NZ for early learning centres, kura, schools and tertiary campuses. Every macron is checked before anything is made, and we check the typeface displays macrons properly, because some fonts don’t. The wording needs to come from the right people. At Te Matapihi we worked with Tihei Māori and Extended Whānau throughout, and every macron was signed off before any vinyl went up.

For your site, that usually means working from wording signed off by your reo teachers, kaumātua, mana whenua or your institution’s Māori advisors. Bilingual signs are also now a common sight in schools and Universities.

Do you make braille and accessible signage for schools and campuses?2026-09-23T13:11:35+12:00

Yes. We make braille signs for schools, early learning centres, universities and polytechnics, using UV printed braille and raised lettering for room and facility signs.

We also laser cut accessible icons and make accessible parking and wayfinding signs. Tactile signs go at 1200mm to 1600mm so students, staff and visitors who are blind or have low vision can reach and read them.

How should school signs be designed so everyone can read them?2026-09-23T13:06:24+12:00

Good school sign design comes down to short words, strong contrast and one or two plain typefaces. Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 between text and background, and choose matte finishes so lights don’t cause glare. As a guide, allow about 25mm of letter height for every 3 metres of viewing distance. That is about 50mm for a sign read from 6 metres, and about 100mm from 12 metres.

Children who can’t read yet need a picture or symbol as well as the words, and symbols also help international students and visitors on tertiary campuses. Don’t rely on colour alone. Colour coded zones only work for everyone if each zone also has a name, letter or icon, which also helps people who are colour blind.

For neurodivergent students, keep the wording direct, the layout the same from sign to sign, and the sign uncluttered. Tell people what to do, for example “Visitors, please sign in at reception”.

See some examples of and inspiration on designing and make signs for schools on our Education Signage  page.

Where should signs go on a school or campus?2026-09-23T13:00:41+12:00

Campus wayfinding signs work best where someone has to make a choice: the gate, the front door, corridor intersections, stairwells, car parks and the edge of the drop-off area. A sign that confirms the way at each of these points does more than a dozen signs in between.

Start with the route every visitor takes, from the gate to reception. Mount signs at adult eye level, keep braille and tactile signs between 1200mm and 1600mm so they can be reached and read by touch, and add picture signs at a child’s eye height in early learning and junior areas.

On larger campuses, put maps at every main arrival point, including bus stops and car parks, and make building names or numbers big enough to read from across the quad. Keep signs clear of doorways and door swings, and use the same format everywhere so it feels familiar.

Find out nore about  wayfinding for a education facilities on our education signage page.

What signs does a school, early learning centre or campus need?2026-09-23T12:56:44+12:00

School signage requirements in NZ start with two legal ones. Schools and early learning centres must display no smoking and no vaping notices at or immediately inside every entrance, and at the outer entrance to every building or enclosed area on site. Buildings covered by the Building Code also need exit signs, which can be externally lit, internally lit or photoluminescent.

Beyond that, most sites need an entrance sign, directions to reception or the front office, a site or campus map, room and building signs, car park and drop-off signs, and evacuation and assembly point signs. Universities and polytechnics set their own smokefree policies, and usually need more wayfinding because people arrive through many entrances, not one.

Requirements vary from site to site. We check what applies to yours at the site check, and your building consultant or council can confirm the rest.
