Illuminated Signs. Be Seen Day and Night

Your Brand Doesn’t Sleep. Your Signage Shouldn’t Either.

There’s a reason the most recognisable businesses on any street tend to have illuminated signage. Light draws the eye — it’s that simple. A well-made illuminated sign signals that a business is open, active, and worth stopping for.

From bold LED lightboxes that cut through a busy retail strip, to subtle backlit lettering that adds sophistication to a corporate entrance, the right illuminated sign does a quiet but powerful job of shaping how people perceive your brand.

And the practical side stacks up too. Modern LED illuminated signs are built to last, cost relatively little to run, and hold their visual impact in rain, dark, or dull overcast days.

Why Illuminated Signs Work Harder For Your Business

if your sign goes dark at night, so does your brand.

Most signage stops working when the sun goes down. Illuminated signs don’t.

Whether it’s a LED lightbox above your shopfront or the warm glow of backlit letters, illuminated signs keep your brand visible and recognisable around the clock. In busy retail strips or commercial precincts, that kind of presence adds up fast.

The options have also come a long way. Today’s LED-lit signs are far more energy-efficient than older technologies, meaning lower running costs without any compromise on impact. And with styles ranging from sleek, modern light-boxes to eye-catching neon-effect displays, there’s an illuminated solution that suits virtually every brand personality and budget.

Designing Illuminated Signs

Illuminated Design Considerations

As with 3D Signs, location is a significant factor when considering the design of a lit-up sign. External, illuminated signs need to stand out from the competition but must also be designed to fit in with their local surroundings and not become a nuisance.

In addition, one needs to consider whether or not a building is a heritage site with specific council rules attached or if there are other LED signs positioned close by which may clash with or detract from your LED logo or design.

Businesses can also use lit signage in practical ways to increase site security and even lead the public to safety in an emergency. In this case, Fabricators must establish correct colour, clarity and brightness.

Lit Signage Near A Motorway

The angle an illuminated building sign is placed in relation to its audience must be considered, especially if it is viewed by motorists travelling at speed. A Sign perpendicular to passing motorists, for example, will allow for more reading time than one positioned horizontally. Typography size, kerning, message length and even sometimes colour will need to be modified accordingly.

If the sign is positioned near a motorway, there are additional regulations in NZ. For example, signs should not involve movement or be illuminated by intermittent or flashing light sources. Equally important, they should not obscure or confuse the interpretation of any traffic signals or controls.

Branding and Atmosphere

A lit-up business sign needs to advertise your brand and represent the atmosphere of your business. Different outcomes can be achieved by choosing the correct sign types, signage materials, LED colours, fabrication methods and mounting options.

An important consideration is how your brand colour will look and how clearly your message will read when the sign lights are on. It takes a skilled designer and knowledgeable fabricator to ensure that brand colours are kept constant and that all LED letters are perfectly legible, with or without Illumination.

Design and Engineering

Lighting affects different sign options in different ways. Back-Lit lighting, for example, does not lend itself well to multicoloured, patterned letters, as the halo effect itself renders the face of the letter as a silhouette. In this case, additional lighting may need to be incorporated. In the case of a cabinet sign, solid colours work best and limiting the use of gradients is recommended.

Lit Signage needs specialist engineering and fabrication as well as electrical compliance. Additionally, design needs to suit a space with an electrical junction behind the wall or in the ceiling above. The design must be able to facilitate cables and cords that should be hidden from view. Finally, all LED signage needs to be water-resistant, safe and durable.

Signage Design Ideas

Lighting should enhance your sign and make your message stand out. However, take care not to overdo it with lighting effects as this may cause blur or make your sign difficult to read. That said, this type of signage is incredibly versatile.

A designer can incorporate different coloured materials and LED bulbs that turn on and off or change colour. Clever use of shadow and light can produce some fantastic effects. What’s more, the LED light itself can be cool or warm and placed in different locations creating the desired mood.

Let us design and produce you a modern, energy-efficient Sign that SHINES.

Creating a Illuminated Signs

LED’s

LEDs have revolutionised illuminated sign manufacture in recent years due to their small size, low voltage, energy efficiency, long life and low heat output. As a result, effects that were not possible in the past are now mainstream, allowing creative freedom at reasonable costs.

For this reason, Signbiz uses LED-based systems in all of our Front-lit, Back-lit, LightBox and Neon Signage Projects.

Front Lit / Channel Letters (Acrylic)

Once the Face (Front edge) and Return (Sides) of a channel letter have been cut on the laser or router, the returns are heated and bent into shape. They are positioned carefully against the face, taped into place and sealed with specialised acrylic glue. LED lighting components are attached within the letter to shine through the surface.

Care is taken when positioning these lights to avoid hot spots forming; this is when the LED bulb shines brighter in a particular area, producing a dot on the face of the letter, and should be avoided.

Light-Boxes and Cabinet Signs

Light-boxes are constructed by making a rigid casing from aluminium or steel and adding a single or double semi-transparent face. These faces are made from translucent, opal acrylic, which diffuses the light as it passes through it. Then, cut vinyl graphics or translucent digital prints are applied to the face. The acrylic has size limitations, and therefore, for larger signs, a product is known in the industry as Flex-face is preferred. It is a type of PVC banner which is printed, then stretched over the face of the casing. It allows more sizeable signs to be fabricated without visible joints or seams on the front of the sign.

LED lighting is carefully installed. The position and angle of the LED bulbs will depend on the size and elevation of the light-box itself and must be considered before installation.

Custom made light cabinets can also be manufactured if desired. Lettering is cut through an opaque aluminium sign-face using our computer-controlled profile cutting equipment. When illuminated at night, it gives an effect similar to individually formed channel letters.

Backlit or Halo Signs

LED Components are attached to the back of a 3D Sign mounted off the wall or substrate using spacers. When illuminated, the light is directed at the surface behind the letter and filters around the outsides, producing a halo effect. These signs are also sometimes referred to as reverse channel letters.

Neon Signs

For Our Neon signage, we use a product called LED Neon Flex. Neon flex is produced from flexible PVC, which houses an internal, flexible circuit of LED lights. It emits a constant colourful glow, which can be even brighter than a traditional neon tube.

This is a way more affordable product than traditional glass neon tubing as it is is easier to work with, easy to replace, requires less power and needs way less maintenance. Neon Flex lighting is gas, lead and mercury-free, and there is no glass to break, making it safer to handle and more versatile to use. In addition, it comes with all the advantages of LED lighting mentioned above.

A fabricator will cut Neon Flex to size and connect the internal, exposed wires to a power pin. This connection is achieved by centring the pin over the exposed wires and pushing until they can’t be pushed any further. Once this process is complete, the exposed end of the power pin is connected to the female end of the power cord. When the Flex is the correct length and connected to power, you bend and shape it into position, securing it where necessary.
