The Project

TotalEnergies Project Overview

Total Energies is one of the world’s largest energy companies, operating in more than 130 countries across oil and gas, renewables, and bio-energies. In New Zealand, TotalEnergies NZ, formerly Total Oil NZ, operates 11 branches from Whangarei to Dunedin, supplying lubricants and energy products across the country.

In 2021, TotalEnergies rebranded globally. A year later, TotalEnergies NZ followed suit, requiring a complete rebrand of all branches, warehouses, and a fleet of 61 vehicles by 1 September 2022.

They issued an RFP to four signage companies. Signbiz was the only one to submit a complete, on-time proposal, and won the contract.

Following the rebrand, Signbiz became TotalEnergies NZ’s preferred national signage supplier.

the Brief

One national partner for a full rebrand

TotalEnergies NZ issued a competitive RFP in July 2022, inviting four signage companies to tender. The brief called for a single national partner to plan, fabricate, and install new signage across 9 branches and wrap a fleet of 61 vehicles, all within a three-week window ahead of the 1 September relaunch.

The scope covered external building and warehouse signage, painting where required, outdoor panel and post signs, roadside pylons and plinths, internal reception and office signage, wayfinding, door and room signs, window frosting, wall graphics, corflute posters, brand flags for branches, and vehicle decals across the entire fleet. The successful company would also become TotalEnergies NZ’s preferred national signage supplier ongoing.

Key requirements were strict brand consistency across all locations, long-life materials rated for a minimum of five years external, and delivery by the relaunch date. Signbiz submitted a full proposal covering every requirement: a site audit, signage types with alternative options, visual mockups, a per-branch budget breakdown, a project timeline, and a named account manager for ongoing branch support.

A Message from Total Energies

Testimonials

In 2022 Total Oil NZ rebranded to TotalEnergies NZ in line with the global initiative of being committed to better energy. As part of the rebrand project we needed a New Zealand owned signage company to partner with to provide internal and external signage for our branches across New Zealand. The successful applicant would also then be our preferred signage supplier for all future signage requirements.

SignBiz were the only company out of the four that we invited to tender that submitted a proposal on time that answered all of our questions in detail. They made it an easy choice. The rebrand project was delivered on time and on budget and nothing was ever a problem. The stress of having to deal with multiple local companies was eliminated.

Post project, Ross and the team at SignBiz have been exceptional to deal with. Nothing is too big — or too small. They are fast and efficient and the quality of their work is excellent. I cannot recommend SignBiz highly enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use one national signage company rather than multiple local suppliers?2026-06-15T13:31:11+12:00

Using multiple local suppliers on a national rebrand introduces real risk: different interpretations of brand guidelines, inconsistent materials and finishes, and no single point of accountability when something needs sorting.

When TotalEnergies NZ put their rebrand to tender, they specifically needed a New Zealand-owned company that could handle all locations as a single supplier and then become their preferred supplier ongoing. After the project completed, their General Manager Operations noted that the stress of dealing with multiple local companies was eliminated entirely.

Signbiz operates 12 branches as one company. One team holds your brand files. One account manager coordinates the work nationally. One standard applies at every location. When you need a reprint, an update, or an additional sign at any branch, there is one call to make.

How do you manage vehicle fleet signage across multiple branches and locations?2026-06-15T13:32:08+12:00

Fleet signage at scale requires careful coordination. Each vehicle needs to be accessible at the right time without disrupting the branch’s operations, and every wrap needs to meet the same quality standard regardless of where it is done.

For TotalEnergies NZ, Signbiz wrapped 61 vehicles across the country: SUVs, utes, trucks, vans, forklifts, and trailers. We worked through each branch liaison to schedule vehicle access, kept disruption to a minimum, and where vehicles carried existing brand elements worth retaining, we kept those while replacing all outdated Total Oil branding.

Managing a fleet across 11 locations in a two-week window requires a team that operates nationally as one unit with shared systems, shared standards, and real-time communication between branches. That is how Signbiz is set up.

What should I include in a signage RFP for a national rebrand?2026-06-15T13:33:32+12:00

Based on our experience with projects like the TotalEnergies NZ rebrand, a strong Request For Proposal should ask suppliers to provide a site audit across all locations, the signage types proposed with alternative options and pricing, visual mockups of proposed work, a budget breakdown per site and per application type, a full project timeline from award through to completion, and named primary contacts with an account manager for ongoing branch communication.

TotalEnergies NZ invited four signage companies to tender. Signbiz was the only one to submit a complete, on-time proposal that addressed every requirement. That thoroughness made the decision straightforward.

If you are preparing a signage RFP and want guidance on what to include, talk to our team. We are happy to help you structure it before you go to market.

How long does a nationwide signage rebrand take in New Zealand?2026-06-15T13:32:51+12:00

It depends on the scope, but the TotalEnergies NZ rebrand gives a useful benchmark.

Phase 1 covered external signage across 9 branches and the wrapping of 61 vehicles. It was completed within two weeks. The full project ran across three phases over approximately 12 months, including the Christchurch branch rebrand following their relocation in 2023. Please note that this was planned according to their schedule and the timeline that they set out.

For most national rebrands, Signbiz plans the work in phases: externally visible signage first to meet any launch deadline, then internal signage, then any remaining locations. Clear timelines, a named account manager per branch, and a team that communicates nationally keep things on track.

If you have a hard go-live date, tell us early. That is the most important piece of information for planning a rebrand at scale.

Can one signage company handle a nationwide rebrand across multiple locations in New Zealand?2026-06-15T13:34:11+12:00

Yes, and this is one of the clearest advantages of working with a company that operates nationally as a single team rather than a franchise network.

When TotalEnergies NZ rebranded from Total Oil in 2022, they needed new signage across 11 branches from Whangarei to Dunedin, plus 61 vehicles, all delivered by 1 September. Signbiz managed the entire project as one team: one point of contact, one consistent standard, one timeline. There was no coordinating between regional suppliers, no gaps in brand consistency, and no risk of one branch looking different from another.

Signbiz operates 12 branches across New Zealand as one company. That structure makes a significant difference on large multi-site projects. When something needs sorting, head office can reach a local installer in real time rather than chasing an independent contractor.
